Breeder J. Wissnet, Simbach a Inn. Sandor first appeared at a US show in 1898 (when he was 4 years old) and cleaned up over an entry of 79 danes. He was described: “as a combination of size, symmetry, character and quality we have never had his equal in this country and it is possible he could not have been beaten by any dog living when in his prime.” Sandor’s owner, Mr. Tilford died in (or just before) 1900, and the dogs in his kennels were dispersed; Sandor went to Montebello. Mr. Cardeza decided to give up Great Danes and it is said that all but Sandor were disposed of in one way or anoher, the old dog being retained as the home dog, but he died about a year later.

Breeder: Engelbert Haider, Simbach a. Inn. Sektor was bred to his half sister, Flora II v Inn and produced Hannah-Brunner. Brother to Prinz II v Inn. Perhaps an example of the “yellow-Lab” look. Sektor was considered the best and most successful stud dog the dane breed had ever known, besides his sire Prinz 811. Brother of CH Meteor-Haider. Although his brother Meteor had taken the highest show honors, he did not have the ability to produce as well as Sektor did, proving – even back then – that in spite of completely identical bloodlines it’s not always the best and most beautiful dog in the litter that’s the best dog for breeding. In earlier years Sektor had attended shows almost exclusively in south and middle Germany, he was never shown in Berlin. In the 4 years before his death, almost all the top winners in the biggest shows were sons or daughters of Sektor; and those were big shows with entries well over 100. Besides all these top-winning dogs, Sektor also produced a large number of class winners. This is extraordinary considering that Sektor was mated with only relatively few – and indeed, more mediocre than high class bitches. While his owner realized his potential, the owners of outstanding bitches equal to him in birth didn’t take advantage of his services. Perhaps they were “champion-chasing” – a trait well known in today’s breeders. In February 1909 at only 6 ¾ years of age, Sektor died as the result of a bladder hemorrhage. His owner had taken him to the Veterinary College in Dresden soon after the first symptoms appeared and the confirmed diagnosis was that a violently acute general inflammation of the bladder had caused it to rupture, which led swiftly to death. Anyone who had seen this magnificent dog in his last days marveled at the almost youthful suppleness this nearly 7-year-old dog. His death destroyed several breeders’ hopes, and his owner mourned a true friend and constant companion. Sektor v Inn produced many progeny which appear in extended pedigrees of most of today’s Danes all over the world.

CH Senta-Valeria 207 (brindle, blue carrier) (Marko-Leonberg 55 x Valeria-Bella 213) Born January 17, 1891. Breeder/Owner: Karl Diffine, Russelsheim am Main. CH Senta-Valeria was the main foundation of the highly influential Gloria line. In the DDSB vol. III she is sometimes referred to as CH Senta-Gloria (same registration number). Senta was bred by Karl Diffine’, a veterinarian. Vol. I says her owner was Max Diesch of Stuttgart, but by VOl. II she was back in the ownership of her breeder. She was mated to 6 different dogs and the resulting lines were bred to outstanding sires and dams and frequently interwoven. Dr. Diffine’ didn’t seem too fussy at first about registering all the progeny and often used the same names with I, II, III or IV attached, until the new DDC rules came in, but with some persistence all the Gloria’s can be sorted out and traced – at least those used for breeding. Senta-Valeria’s second breeding was to the well-known harlequin Ciardi I 402 and this produced Tosca-Gloria II (aka ToscaII-Gloria). There is an old picture of her, impossible to tell if she has no mask, a white mask – or grey with age. The striping is very faint – and perhaps blue.

Sultanine [Westermeier] 4291 (black) (Rigo v Mintraching x Flora [Krebs], unregistered) Born 1920 (sister to TIlly Westermeier 4809) Owners: 1) Matthias Schleinkofer, near Regensburg; 2) Hans Meier of Nurnberg. In 1921 one Matthias Schleinkofer near Regensburg used CH Prinz Fuchs on a black bitch called Sultanine (Westermeier) 4291, and this produced the harl Atlas (Schleinkofer) 5779. Then Sultanine went to Hans Meier of Nurnberg and the breeding was repeated in March 1922, producing a litter of two harls and four blacks which included the famous harl CH Lendor v Zeltnerschloss 4523, who was bought by J.V. Rank and Bill Siggers in England and became known as CH Rex Landor v Zeltnerschloss of Ouborough and sometimes Rex Lendor, etc. etc. – all the same dog with the same DDSB registration number. He left many offspring in Germany before going across the channel. Mr. Schleinkofer must have been pleased at what he got from CH Prinz Fuchs because he also bred Sultanine’s harl sister Tilly Westermeier 4809 to him twice.
