Earl of Wurtemburg [aka Roelofs 92] (light golden brindle: ”hellgoldgestromt”, blue carrier. (sire = [DDSB, Mark-Leonberg 55] [AKC, Marco] x Aranca, unregistered. Born March 3, 1891 Owners: Max Diesch, Stuttgart, then to Lawrence, USA (whether this was S.A. Lawrence of Nassau, Long Island – or the Lawrence Great Dane kennels of Columbus, Ohio, it’s not stated). Breeder G. Zirkler, Ludwigsburg. He was known in Germany as Roelofs and was already a prizewinner when he was shipped to the US. With AKC registration, he became known as Earl of Wurtemburg and was known during his time as the “best dog ever imported to America.” Unfortunately, his AKC pedigree varies a little from what the Germans give, so I have included both. In an old 1910 article it was stated in reference to Earl of Wurtenburg that “his blood is nearly extinct now.” A very erroneous statement – it flows in anything with Dinro, Marydane, Honey Hollow, Gilbert, Duyster, Blendon, Zordane (and others), behind it. He was noted as a dane of “unusual size” and had the “type and good points combined which make the prize winner par excellence.” Later on he was not regarded as a great show winner being “decidedly coarse”, and he never did finish in the US. But he was regarded as a great producer, although not necessarily of champions but producers in turn.

She had several litters with and after her last with Paul Schneider (sire Famulus and pups Fant, Fabel, Falz, Fax and Flaus) Ella v Dornburg was leased to Wilhelm Schroen of Mainz and his famed Moguntia kennels where the breeding to CH Famulua Hansa was repeated immediately, resulting in a momentous litter of three born November 25, 1919. All three made their marks – Fauna Moguntia, Foppa Moguntia & Festa Moguntia. In 1922, Paul Schneider had a Hansa litter out of Fauna Moguntika, possibly an arrangement around the lease of her dam, Ella v Dornburg, back in 1919. The sire was Hans II vd Rheinschanze.

At that time, genetics was thought to be inherited solely through the blood, and it is speculated that they thought Ador could carry the “blended blood” of both sires. It’s also speculated that his real sire was Leo but since many pedigrees of Ador’s thousands of kids & grandkids had already been circulated, it was best just to add Leo’s name to the pedigree. CH Etfa vd Saalburg (fawn) (CH Bosko vd Saalburg x Fauna Moguntia) Born 1925. Breeder: Karl Faerber, Bad Homburg. Younger sister to Dolf vd Saalburg. Dam of Perse & Pax v Birkenhof. Was the foundation of Margaret Hostetter’s Ridge Crest Kennels. Etfa was brought to California by Joseph Eigenbauer in 1927/1928 and exhibited in a small show. In those days (circa 1928) all colors competed in ONE open class. In the Spring of 1928 Etfa placed second, the judge explaining that he thought that Etfa was crossed with a Greyhound, considering her refinement and those good angulated, well-muscled strong hindquarters. Then came the Ambassador Hotel auditorium glamour show of the West in the Fall – with the top judges in the country; they put Etfa as Best in Show, and then wound things up with a breed win at the “Garden.” This classic creature began a career in America that was to shake the dog world. At around this time Margaret Hostetter bought Etfa as a foundation for her Ridge Crest Kennels and campaigned her to many outstanding wins. The electric effect of this bitch can best be gathered by a quotation from the May issue of the 1930 AKC Gazette: “The consensus of opinion among judges is that Etfa is one of the greatest of her breed in recent years. In fact, a number of authorities say she is the handsomest dog or bitch in the show ring today in any breed.” Etfa’s claim to being the nearest to perfection for her breed still remains unchallenged, and she thereby established an IDEAL of the breed, as in those days there were no illustrated Standard, and danes were judged only by the written standard, or by specimens that had been observed previously. The mark of a truly great bitch is in what she produces. When a bitch can reproduce her own beauty, and do it consistently this becomes an outstanding animal among outstanding animals. Etfa was one of these bitches. Mother of nine champions, including such BIS winners as CH Betty of Ridge Crest.
